VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Amber Matalus of the volleyball team has been named the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlin of the Week for the week ending on Sept. 16, 2018.
Although the team only had one match due to weather, Matalus played a large role for the Marlins. The junior racked up 13 kills on 17 attempts, giving her a career-best kill percentage of .647. Where she really excelled was in the match’s second set where VWU found itself down 24-20 to rival Eastern Mennonite. With the help of her teammates, Matalus strung together three straight kills, including a pretty slide to get the 23rd point. Her offense sparked some momentum and the team ended up taking the set 26-24 en route to a straight-set victory. The middle also chipped in a pair of block assists to boot.
On the season, the Colorado Springs, Colo. native has registered 68 kills on a .351 clip which leads the team. She also is tied for the squad lead in total blocks with 15.
Volleyball returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team hosts Christopher Newport University in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
